‘Santa Catalina’ Silk satin chiffon shawl by Carole Waller

A swathe of soft silk satin chiffon in orange, dark chocolate, copper beech and yellows from the Oasis collection circa 1995. The colour is applied with deys and pigments to create a varied texture of shine and matte finish. A visit to a convent, the Monasterio de Santa Catalina, a 16th century Colonial building in the centre of the city of Arequipa in Peru – with it’s glorious colour washed walls – inspired a whole collection of work . From the interior space you could hear the chatter of people in the city but outside the walls – so my colourful cloths are overprinted with ‘indistinct chatter’ written by an artist and friend Joan Levinson in New York.

Carole Waller art to wear:

Each garment and scarf by Carole Waller is unique. They are handpainted and screenprinted by me at my studio just outside Bath. I use my fabrics as unprimed ‘canvases’ and the paintings evolve as I work so no two pieces are the same. Every scarf is signed and you can commission me to make a piece especially for you. I cannot colour match, but I can promise you a unique artwork. I welcome visitors anytime, by appointment. The studio and small showroom is at our home 4 miles east of Bath on the A4, with good parking and a warm welcome. Waller and Wood was formerly in Abbey Green in Bath.
