‘Offcut’ handpainted pink silk munha scarf Carole Waller
Silk munha was a silk reserved for royalty in India – and is a lovely subtle cloth with a soft sheen which wraps and falls beautifully – and this very long scarf can be worn in many ways.
This shawl is a one off original by Carole from the Offcut collection – and is painted and screenprinted in pinks, reds, golden yellow and tiny dashes of pale grey. It is artisan woven for me in India, so there are some slight discrepancies in the weave.
The ‘Offcut’ Collection : I have been making painted clothes and scarves since 1987 – and have one dressmaker. She cuts each piece out and gives me back the leftover painted cloth. My project this year was to make new things with these offcuts and I have made a series of paintings/collages and constructions exploring the negative spaces surrounding the abstract shapes of the remnants of the making process. This in turn got me drawing! I started drawing the shapes – making paper stencils to screen print new images to play with their relationships on a new collection of clothes and scarves in cotton and silk. Recycling and reinventing – slow and circular fashion – one thing becoming another.

Carole Waller art to wear:
Each garment and scarf by Carole Waller is unique. They are handpainted and screenprinted by me at my studio just outside Bath. I use my fabrics as unprimed ‘canvases’ and the paintings evolve as I work so no two pieces are the same. Every scarf is signed and you can commission me to make a piece especially for you. I cannot colour match, but I can promise you a unique artwork. I welcome visitors anytime, by appointment. The studio and small showroom is at our home 4 miles east of Bath on the A4, with good parking and a warm welcome. Waller and Wood also shows beautiful stoneware ceramics by Gary Wood.
