‘Ladder’ green and yellow pieced silk scarf Carole Waller

A green border and lots of other colour in this pieced silk scarf which is a collage of painted opaque and transparent silks from my collection of fabric pieces accrued over time.

Zac Merle and I worked on the compositions of colour and photographed them in the garden behind the studio. We put together strips and patches of silks such as crepe de chine and transparent georgette – sewn together with raw edges by myself and then carefully bound with a neat frame of folded silk by my dressmaker. The colours of this one include a green border, yellow, tomato red, purple, light grass green, lavender, soft yellow and chestnut.

It’s a unique collection of 12 silk scarves made using offcuts of painted silk generated in the cutting out process whilst making my clothing. The cloth for each piece of my painted clothing starts out white and rectangular – and is cut out and sewn by my lovely dressmaker Ali Andrews. I use every scrap of the cloth – converting the offcuts into scarves, collage, ribbons for my packaging – and anything else I can think of.

Carole Waller art to wear:

Each garment and scarf by Carole Waller is unique. The pieces are handpainted and screenprinted by me at my studio just outside Bath. I use my fabrics as unprimed ‘canvases’ and the paintings evolve as I work so no two pieces are the same.

You can commission me to make a piece especially for you. I cannot colour match, but I can promise you a unique artwork. I welcome visitors anytime, by appointment.

Waller and Wood is our gallery name from the time we had a retail space in Bath between 2015 and 2020 – My studio and small showroom is now at our home 4 miles east of Bath on the A4, with good parking and a warm welcome.

The sculpture in the photograph is by Jonathan Leslie – contact him or me for further details.
