ABOUT

Carole Waller is a painter who specialises in painting with dye directly onto cloth for the purpose of making completely unique painted silk clothing – art to wear (called Wearable Art in the US). She has perfected the art of painting directly onto silk,  making a wearable and washable painting with incredible richness of mark and colour.

Her silk clothes are contemporary, stylish and timeless. The label is ‘I’m no walking Canvas’.   Carole began to make wearable art in 1986 – having trained in painting at Canterbury College of Art and for an MA at Cranbrook Academy of Art near Detroit. Her work is featured in many books on contemporary textiles and is found in museums such as the V&A , private collections and contemporary galleries internationally. Awards include a major Research and Development Award from Arts Council England in 2005 and a QEST scholarship in 2007 for glass studies. Carole became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Painters and Stainers in 2011.

She has sold through Harvey Nichols , Liberty of London and Bergdorf Goodman in New York and you will find examples of her clothing and paintings on unstretched cloth in the V&A Clothing Collections.

Carole paints directly onto cloth with using dye with paintbrushes – like paint on canvas. The resulting fabric is lightfast and washable. A variety of techniques are used in the paintings to achieve a semi transparent effect. Unique painted cloth which creates shadows because of its transparency, and which shimmers with colour.

Carole also makes large scale paintings on cloth which hang freely in space or against walls – and can laminate the paintings between toughened glass to create panels as freestanding artworks, windows, screens or door panels. The laminated glass panels are toughened low iron glass withstanding huge extremes of temperature. They can be used indoors and outside as freestanding artworks on plinths – or incorporated into any situation where glass might be used.

She has been commissioned to make  paintings for residential and public spaces – and also has extensive experience working with teams of consultants, architects, interior designers and other artists on collaborative large scale projects.
